Created 30-Aug-07. I started originally with a 1960's Liverpool collection but soon realised it would be very big indeed, so I've broken it down into 1961/1963 and then yearly to 1968 when I was working for British Eagle. They ceased trading in Nov-68. These photo's were taken on a variety of camera's and many of the results are not particularly good.

Updated 02-Sep-07. Collection complete. I started photographing aircraft in the early 1960's and was one of the few who were doing colour slides at that time. Unfortunately I only had an old Kodak Retinette 1B so the results are obviously not what you would expect from a SLR camera. However, these photo's do give an idea of colour schemes etc. Sadly some of my early 60's slides have deteriorated and are no longer good enough.

Originally to handle charter flights just for the summer season but I ended up staying. Updated 10-Nov-70, collection complete. 1982 was the year Laker Airways stopped operating. The A300, DC-10 & One Eleven in this collection had been impounded at Manchester. B.Cal bought all 4 of Lakers 1-11's and as B.Cal's Station Manager I stayed in the office until after midnight on 1st April and took delivery of G-AVBW from the Liquidator. I was surprised to find that aircraft have an owners logbook, just like a car (one careful owner, never been raced etc) !!! It became G-BKAU the following morning. Also this year was the visit to the UK of His Holiness the Pope. The two B.Cal S-61N's featured here were used as 'Papal One' & 'Papal Two'.

One oddity is that the majority of smaller aircraft don't carry the 'ZK' country marks, just the last 3 letters of the reg. Hardly surprising when you think about it with the nearest land, Australia, over 2000miles/3200km away, they never fly 'abroad' !! Next stop Christchurch (CHC)

Trying to do so from any distance is a real problem because of the ever present heat-haze. On this mid afternoon in March it was 40C in the shade, and I wasn't in the shade!! I didn't stand around for long !!

I had planned to talk to the Security Office before I went up there but there was a queue. However, no one bothered me while I was on the car park. Sorry about the profusion of Hawaiian B717's but I probably won't get the opportunity again.

I spent most of the time on top of the Terminal A Car Park (or was it 'D' !! - the one at the eastern end anyway). As it's one of Continental's main bases, theres lots of CO stuff here.

In 1999, the spectator terrace at Las Palmas (LPA) was still split in two, with half 'landside' and the other half 'airside', so I was able to take some photo's from here. Unfortunately, they are through glass so there are some with reflections. It was also the first time I'd hired a car so I was able to get to the garage forecourt overlooking the runway touchdown point. Heat haze in telephoto ground shots from here can be a real problem too.

Updated 05-Feb-08, collection complete. Las Palmas (LPA) is excellent for photo´s when aircraft are landing on 03L. There is a vantage point across the motorway from the touch-down point which is best for photo's after midday when the sun moves round, believe it or not it´s on a petrol station forecourt situated about 50m/150 feet up a hillside. A 200mm lens is required for sizes down to A320/B737-300 and a 300mm lens for anything smaller. LPA is also a Spanish military base with F.18 training and some CASA/IPTN 235's, plus SAR Fokker F.27's. These normally use the 'military' runway, 03R and small aircraft landing on this runway are too distant for good photo's. Shot´s are possible of aircraft awaiting takeoff on 03L but the heat haze can be wicked. The viewing deck in the terminal can only be accessed from the departure lounge after check-in & security.

Some of the military stuff landing on 03R was a bit distant (& small!) so the results are not brilliant. Likewise some of ground shots of aircraft awaiting take-off are suffering from heathaze.

Updated 23-Sep-07, collection complete. Just 4 days after joining Caledonian Airways on 1st February 1969, they sent me off to Libya on a Haj operation for two months. It was still a Kingdom at the time. Photo's were taken at Tripoli (TIP) and Sebha (SEB), an oasis town in the desert about 400 miles south of Tripoli. I should definitely write a book ....

What an amazing place, theres so much happening all the time that you need eyes in the back of your head! Next, a day trip to Houston-Intercontinental (IAH), then back to Miami for a few days and then home for a rest !!! A once-in-a-lifetime journey. Would I do it again - you bet !!!

Updated 25-Mar-09, collection complete. A day trip to Milan-Malpensa (MXP). As anyone who has tried to follow our hobby at Italian airports knows, it's virtually impossible! If the Police or Carabinieri see you with binn's or a camera, they will throw you out/confiscate your gear/arrest you (or any combination of the three). If you must go to Italian airports, keep your gear in your bag and don't stand too long in one spot. The shot of the Alitalia 'Bacci' logo 747 is truely awful, very blurred, but it surprised me and I didn't have a chance to set the camera up! I've left it in anyway! All these photo's were taken through double glazed/tinted windows & I'm afraid it shows a bit on some.

Updated 16-Dec-07, collection complete. I visited the small mountain airfield of Mount Cook (MON) specifically to to take a ski-plane ride to the Tasman Glacier. It was a most profound experience. On the top of the glacier it was completely silent. No insects, no birds, not a sound, nothing! It's difficult to explain in print, you need to go there ... Next stop, briefly, Fiji.

Needless to say, by the time I got to Tokyo I had a very bad cold !! And yes, the grass really was this colour, it looked dead !! This trip was on a Britannia (only 3/half hours & pressurised - a big improvement on the DC-4 !). Also 3 photo's from PMI in 1964. Some more Palma shots from Sep-67 added 18-Sep-07

In the 'tropical' zone, Singapore (SIN) is always hot & humid & frequently overcast. I was using 200 ASA film at the time and the morning of 1st January was very dark, so some of the early morning photo's are a bit grainey. ** 10 more photo's replaced 19-Dec-07 with improved less grainey versions ** Next stop Melbourne (MEL)

Updated 10-Apr-09, collection complete. A short stop in Singapore (SIN) on the way to Oz in late 1999. All these photo's are taken through glass, some are distant and a bit grainy. The Minebea DC-10 is distant, blurred and grainy but it has rarity value (that and the fact I'm a DC-10 nut!) so I've left it in. Likewise the SQ B747-312 in Trans Intl Express c/s & the one in SAfrican Star c/s which were never delivered

Created 16-Aug-07. Viewing at Singapore (SIN) used to be great. Sadly the T2 viewing deck has all but disappeared and the terminal in front of whats left has been extended by about 10 meters. T1 is OK but the lefthand end has disappeared into office space (like the righthand end some years ago) so now you can only see between the piers.

Created 23-Aug-07. Southend (SEN) in the 1960's & early 70's was a big scrapping airfield, mostly ex RAF Percival Prentices & Provosts. Many of the aircraft in this collection look as though they should be scrapped & indeed some were. Don't be fooled though, many were just in winter storage & were cleaned up & returned to service in May & June. Theres also the odd photo from Ostende (OST) in here.

Updated 13-Dec-07, collection complete. Sydney (SYD) is immensely interesting. As I didn't have transport, most of this collection is taken from inside the terminals through glass, resulting in the inevitable reflections. I'm sure the purists won't be impressed ... Next stop Auckland (AKL)

I flew Kansai/Haneda on an ANA B747-481D which arrived late into KIX. 500+ people off, clean & cater (no fuel), 500+ people on, in a turn-round time of just 45 mins, chock-to-chock. Those of you in the business will know that is an amazing feat !! Next stop, Honolulu.

I worked for Canadian Pacific Air Lines in 1966/67 as Station Agent based in Penticton BC (YYF) & in May-67 acted as a 'civilian spotter' with the RCAF during a search & rescue mission on the CH113 Labrador featured here. Updated 27-Mar-09, collection complete. A short visit to Zurich (ZRH) arriving from Milan (MXP) on the Lauda Italy CRJ.100ER. As usual, Zurich doesn't disappoint !! I think this is one of the few times I've been to Zurich and it's been mostly murky and wet!
